Microsoft and Telefonica look at R&D investments in Murcia

Both Microsoft and Telefonica have expressed an interest, according to local newspaper reports (here and here), in investing resources in research and development facilities at the soon-to-be-built 45 hectare science park planned for the Espinardo campus of the University of Murcia. Construction is expected to commence next year. One of the first contracts for the new science park is with Hewlett-Packard, which will offer advanced computer capabilities in Murcia using a super-computer; the investment is estimated at 30mio Euros over five years.

It strikes me that the new science park will have long-term value for educational and employment prospects in this rapidly-developing region, hitherto seen as one of the more under-developed in Spain.
