Spanish National Anthem - still no words!!

Well, that didn't last long, did it? I've been reading over the past few days about the controversy caused by the words selected by the Spanish Olympic Committee (Comité Olímpico Español [COE]) to allow Spaniards to sing words when their national hymn is being played. However, the words remind too many people of the Franco era, quite apart from the fact that they are (in the opinion of this probably irrelevant foreigner) even more than usually cringe-making when compared with many other national anthems - I don't think my view is entirely unique either from what I've read!

In any case the COE has now announced that it will no longer present the words chosen by the jury for official approval and has also cancelled its annual gala scheduled for 21st January, at which the words were to be sung with the national hymn by Plácido Domingo for the first time in public.

Back to the drawing board?

(My earlier post on this subject, where the words are included, is here.)
