Car registrations fall massively in August

With only four days left in the month, it is expected there will be a fall of 40 per cent in new car registrations in Spain in August when compared with a year earlier. The last comparable fall in new car registrations was in January 1993, which recorded a fall of 51 per cent against the previous year. For the period January-August this this the drop in registrations is expected to be 20 per cent compared to the same period last year. Up until yesterday only 41,000 new cars had been registered this month, a level which has alarmed people in the industry.

Just another small sign, if one were needed, of the economic pain currently being faced in Spain (just as in many other western economies right now).

It is probably too soon to say whether the scheme introduced by the government last month to try and make it easier for people to acquire a new car can reverse the present dearth of sales is anyone's guess.
