Trial of Mazarron mayor begins today

As I wrote last week the mayor of Mazarron and two other officials have been indicted on charges of alleged misappropriation of public money for which sentences are being sought by the prosecution of 6 years for the mayor and 5 years and 5 months for the other two, with disqualification from the holding of public office for 10 years for all three.

The recipient of the allegedly fraudulent payments, former council member Domingo Valera, has begun to pay back the sums received in small installments. The trial begins today.

In another report concerning Mazarron council there has been a motion calling for a reduction in municipal taxes to be paid for by a reduction in less urgent expenditure of about 10 per cent, to counteract the recent rises in local taxation levels, in light of the difficult economic situation in general and the poor state of local finances in particular. The motion was rejected with a compromise being agreed to issue a public commitment that costs would be contained in the budget for 2009.
