Major beachfront improvements for three Murcia locations

The beachfront promenades of Puerto de Mazarrón, Águilas and La Manga are to see significant investment of money on public works improvements over the next year or two.

The 'paseo de Francisco Martínez Muñoz' and the 'paseo del Rihuete' in Puerto de Mazarrón will see expenditure of upto 3,968,126 Euros on improvements to the infrastructure, with an estimated completion date of May 2010. I think this particular work must have been announced in general terms already, because I'm pretty sure I heard about the projected improvements commencing after this year's summer season to allow the 9-month project to go ahead, whilst I was in Spain for the winter until recently. The improvements will involve significant changes to traffic flow in the area with the creation of a new parking area at 'Avenida de Rígete' and improved access to existing parking areas.

The works at Águilas have a budget allocation of 3,609,755 Euros to improve the beach-fronts of the 'Levante' and 'Las Delicias' beaches, together with improvements to the garden areas of the 'Paseo de Parra' and the 'calle del Aire', as well as a complete renovation of the adjacent roads. The estimated completion date is about October 2010, which means that it will not be ready for next year's summer season.

For La Manga del Mar Menor the budget allocation is considerably larger indicating the larger scale of the planned improvements; 9.100.619 Euros is to be spent, in the first of four phases of the work, on the area from the 'Gola Marchamalo' to the limits of the municipality of San Javier. There is an artists' impression of how the area will look after these improvements here, to incorporate a cycle path. In all, the budget for La Manga del Mar Menor is likely to total about 43mio Euros, including the three later phases themselves estimated at about 34mio Euros, for which tenders are to be invited next year. The plan is for the cycle path eventually to extend around the whole of the beachfront areas of the Mar Menor.
