EU gives Spain green-light to restrict Romanian labour migration

The EU Commission has just granted Spain a derogation from rules governing the free movement of labour (AFP report) within the European Union, permitting it to place restrictions on Romanian migrants in the country. The derogation will run until the end of 2012 and has been granted because of the high levels of unemployment in Spain resulting from the economic crisis. Since July, Spain has been imposing work permit requirements on Romanians working in the country, but will not affect the free movement of citizens of all EU countries, something Spain has always defended. The Spanish government has stated that Romanians who are already a part of the work force in Spain will not be affected. There are apparently in excess of 800,000 Romanians in Spain.
