Lorca earthquake victims still await funds for rebuilding

Despite being promised help to rebuild their homes in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake in May last year, several thousand residents of Lorca are still waiting for the Murcia Regional Government to provide the money it promised to commit to repairing the damage to homes, schools and health centres. 3,500 of those affected travelled to Murcia city over the weekend to protest outside the Government headquarters about the delay, saying that whilst they supported official efforts to repair historic monuments also damaged during the disaster (notably the bell-tower which was shown collapsing live on television), they consider that priority needs to be given to rebuilding homes and schools for ordinary people.

It is certainly easy to make wild promises in the wake of disasters, but 'walking the walk' rather than just 'talking the talk' is the real test.
